Sunday Recap for 020920 – God is Sovereign Part Three

Sunday, February 9th, 2020, Evident Grace Fellowship looked at Romans 9.25-29:

Romans 9. 25 As indeed he says in Hosea, “Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’” 26 “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”

27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved, 28 for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.”

29 And as Isaiah predicted, “If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom and become like Gomorrah.”

From these verses, we pursued this Big Idea and these 3 points:

God Pours Out Grace on the Unexpected

Romans 9. 25 As indeed he says in Hosea, “Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’” 26 “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”

In these verses, God emphasizes His sovereignty by explaining that He pours out His grace on who He wants, and it is always unexpected. This is illustrated by the fact that many of Israel didn’t believe, and instead, God saved many Gentiles and made them sons of the living God.

The Entitled are Going to be Surprised

27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved, 28 for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.”

Again, despite there being so many children of Israel, only a few of them are going to believe.

Without Grace, We are Hopeless

29 And as Isaiah predicted, “If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom and become like Gomorrah.”

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of their heinous sin and lack of repentance. This would be who we are unless God had chosen to maintain a line of faith people whom He chose.

Truth: God takes great joy in saving the people that the self-righteous least expect.

Application: Live knowing that your salvation is an immense grace that you don’t deserve.

Action: Preach the Gospel to the person you least like and least expect to be part of the people of God.
